A demo install of eZ Platform does not update the Solr index upon publishing new content. This also applies to eZ Studio installation.

If you install a new install of eZ Platform 2016/04 and enable Solr, then the index does not update on adding new content. Updating existing content does update the index, but a reindexing does. Shutting down and restarting the Solr process also seems to work
