Functional tests, using PHPUnit and an HTTP Client, had been quickly drafted last year: https://github.com/ezsystems/ezpublish-kernel/tree/master/eZ/Bundle/EzPublishRestBundle/Tests/Functional.

Some are failing, but there is still value in automating them, as they do cover most of the REST operations to at least some extent.
