Sales team complain that mobile rendering doesn't work well.

I think the standard layout should be tested on the small device screen preview and we sure make sure they look good.
In that case, we should just jump to a one column when reaching the small size. No need to try to keep 2 columns with so few pixels.

Note: all 2 columns template should move to 1 column on small screens, not only the one used on the attached example, or we will have the same problem with other configurations.
